The present invention relates to a system and method for identification and classification of hand woven and machine woven fabrics. The fabric may include Pashmina fabric. The system includes an input module connected with an image capturing device configured to capture a plurality of images of fabric; a data processing module configured to process the captured images of the fabrics and convert into appropriate format; an identification module configured to apply a second convolutional network (CNN) on the standardized input images for classifying fabric type whether the fabric is handmade fabric or machine made fabric; and an output module configured to display results from the identification module to an end-use
