The roof diverts all precipitation on a house on a particular side of the house, which is channelled to the ground using gutter systems. The outlet of the gutter system either drains water into the sewage system or simply open the ground. As the soil has a limited rate of absorption, this causes an accumulation of water. Also, as more and more surface area of city gets paved, smaller and smaller amount of rainwater gets absorbed and more water gets discharged into the drainage system. This can overwhelm the drainage system as the city expands. So, to increase the time for the soil to absorb rainwater, and allow the drainage system to drain at capacity, we suggest using a gutter system downpipe as a storage unit. We suggest placing a pressure valve at the bottom end of the downpipe. This valve will not open till the downpipes are full. Further, methods to increase storing capacity of the gutter system are suggested.
